This article specifically examines how specific examples of visual intertextuality function in Higashimura Akiko ∬ s popular manga series, Tokyo Tarareba Girls. Throughout the series, Higashimura utilizes images that are reminiscent and recall classic shōjo-manga（ girls’ manga）, which create visual intertextuality throughout the text. By creating gaps between the characters’ normal behaviors, attitudes and appearances, these images infuse the text with humor, allowing Higashimura to poke fun at shōjo-manga tropes while revealing herself to be a fan as a person of great knowledge of shōjo-manga tropes. By acting as Easter eggs, or elements hidden throughout texts for readers to find, these intertextual images create ties between\nreaders, characters, and the author, explaining the closeness fans report feeling to the series.\nHowever, although the series earned an enthusiastic audience during its run, its ending was met by criticism and disappointment from many fans. As the ending of the series differed from the stance Higashimura demonstrated through these intertextual Easter eggs, this caused a mismatch between how readers anticipated the series would proceed.
