In recent\nyears, following earnest investigations of and research on the books preserved in\nJapanese Buddhist temples, a few ancient manuscripts of the Gaowang jing have been\ndiscovered, including an edition collected in the “Sacred Transmitted Documents” at\nKongōji. Based on findings related to the ancient manuscripts produced in the Nara\nperiod, this paper starts with a survey of the transmission of the Gaowang jing to Japan\nand of its scripts made in the Nara period. It then proceeds to introduce the Gaowang\njing as preserved in the “Sacred Transmitted Documents” at Kongōji and examine its\nhistory.
