The term “topography-related place names” refers, in this paper, to 1) place names containing at least one letter (kanji) with some meaning of topography such as mountain, river, sea or the lake, 2) suffixes of river names, and 3) others. First, the general view of topography-related place names in Taiwan is explained. Taiwan's topography generally consists of high and dissected mountains, the Taiwan Mountain Range being central, hilly areas, and lowlands. In Taiwan, the place names with the word “mountain 山” are most numerous. This is to be highlighted by the following explanation. No place in Taiwan is outside the limits of visibility of mountains largely because of the relatively small size of the island and the existence of high mountains. It is very likely for anyone to have a perception of mountain when he names a place, and also this kind of place naming was accelerated by the early settlers from Mainland China, especially Fujiang Province, who certainly had the Chinese perception of nature. A result is that in Taiwan a considerably many place names (4%) are with the word “mountain”. This is to be compared with, in relative degree of appearance, fewer place names with the word “mountain” (3%) in Chiangsu Province where mountains are practically non-existent. The word “mountain stream 渓” also appears in a large number as part of place names. However, these place names tend to be found on lowland contrary to the very few appearance in the mountains. The reason is not known. Taiwan's river names are well known for their having “mountain stream” as suffixes. In fact, most of them fall in this category but “big river 河” appears in four rivers, and three of them are found in the north around Taipei. This is quite strange, since this word tends to appear in northern China, not in central or southern China. But the reason is unknown in this case too. The word “river 川” also appears in 15 rivers, but all of these are found around Taipei.
