| 内容記述 | The East Japan Railway Company’s December 2018 announcement of the new station name Takanawa Gateway on the Yamanote line was met with much criticism in the popular press. Although initial criticism focused on the fact that results from a popular vote were not honored, many articles concentrated on the name’s characteristics, despite the fact that similarly named new stations—such as Toranomon Hills, which also featured a mix of loan words（ geetowei‘ gateway’, hiruzu‘ hills’） and historical place names（ Takanawa, Toranomon）—were largely accepted. To examine why Takanawa Gateway was especially targeted, this article conducted a close discourse analysis of 33 articles published from December 2018 to August 2019 in three major newspapers, which revealed three central themes: aichaku ‘affection’, loan words, and historical connections. Affection was given by both ordinary citizens and company representatives as a core evaluative factor, but for ordinary citizens, the use of loan words emphasized Takanawa Gateway’s international—rather than local—identity; this, combined with the lack of semantic transparency of geetowei—despite East Japan’s historical motivations behind the choice—appears to have contributed to a sense of alienation amongst the general public. These results suggest that consideration not just of the image companies wish to produce but also of the relationships they wish to form with local communities should also be factored into selecting names for public spaces. |

| 内容記述 | 2018年12月に、東日本旅客鉄道株式会社が、山手線の最新駅を「高輪ゲートウェイ」と命名したとい う発表が、多くの批判を呼んだ。批判の理由として外来語が含まれていることなど、駅名の特徴自体も 理由として指摘されている。だが、同時期に発表され、同様な特徴の持つ「虎ノ門ヒルズ」に対して批 判が見られない。このことから、「高輪ゲートウェイ」に対する批判が実に複雑であることが読み取れ る。「高輪ゲートウェイ」がなぜ批判されたのかを明らかにするために、本研究では「高輪ゲートウェ イ」の発表とかかわる新聞記事を対象に談話分析を行った。その結果、「高輪ゲートウェイ」の評価にか かわるテーマとして、「愛着」、「造語・表記」、「歴史」が浮き彫りになった。駅名の評価にかかわるもの として一般市民・東日本旅客鉄道株式会社の両方に「愛着」が挙げられたが、一般市民の場合、外来語 が活用されることで、その地域の歴史との関係性が不透明になってしまっており、「自分たちのためでは ない」、という感覚を生み出したと推察された。 |
