内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Handmade paper making in Kumamoto prefecture is originated from the industrial combination of both Kajinoki (Broussonetie Papyrifera Vent) which is planted in this area and the special skills to make handmade paper which came from Kohrai (the ancient name of Korea) and Chikugo rural area. In Edo era, one of the Higo clan's strategies of industrial encouragement caused to develop handmade paper making in Higo district. The prosperity of handmade paper making in this district at that time brought forth a producing center of handmade paper revolving around the area where Kajinoki was planted and produced to a great extent, and Jouhoku area in Higo district turned out to be one of the most important places to make handmade paper. Handmade paper was produced here not only to offer it as the tribute to the Higo clan but also to consume it in this district. Even in Meiji era, handmade paper making took place in Jouhoku area as a side-job of petty farmers. Hence the poor variety of handmade paper and the poor development of the skills to make it. Seri-culture came to be remarkably developed in 1888 to 1897 in Kumamoto prefecture. However, the traditional way of making handmade paper fell into decay to the effect that foreign paper and machine made paper have come to get a set-up in production. Moreover, good -natured paper began to be imported at that time from great cities or making region of high technology in making handmade paper like Osaka, Fukuoka, and Kouchi. Handmade paper industry in Jouhoku area came to be deteriorated in production in the second half of Meiji era, and it gradually changed its regional structure into the area of planting Kajinoki. It is because paper production of Chikugo rural area (in Fukuoka prefecture) which in contiguous to Jouhoku area devel ped to a great extent and it came to need Kajinoki planted in Jouhoku area in large quantities. Thus Jouhoku area, which was once prosperous in making handmade paper in Edo era, changed itself into the rural area of only planting Kajinoki in the midst of the age of industrial revolution in Japan. It was because there was no development of the technology of making paper, no expansion of marketing, no challenge of making new products, and no attitude of taking into consideration the strategy of modern administration.
